Bates Ranch is one of our favorite sites and has been farmed by the Bates family for four generations. This historic site is on a rocky slope facing Mount Madonna near Watsonville and our fruit comes from two adjacent blocks including a beautiful old-vine block planted in the early 1970s.

Towering high above the fog line at 2600 feet of elevation with sweeping views of the Monterey Bay lies the Lago Lomita Vineyard. The steeply-sloped sandy loam soils, warm days and ocean breeze-cooled nights create ideal conditions to grow Nebbiolo. The resulting wine has alluring aromas of flowers, truffle and earth spice and a palate of wonderfully pure red stone fruit.

2024 Santa Cruz Mountains Rosé of Pinot Noir
Hailing from a range of vineyard sites at the far northern reaches of the wild and rugged Santa Cruz Mountains, this rosé balances the brightness and energy of its ocean-cooled origins with the nuance and complexity resulting from thoughtfully-tended Pinot Noir grapes grown on the steep slopes rocky soils of the region.

2023 Mountain Winery Vineyard Chardonnay
Mountain Winery, originally planted by Burgundian Paul Masson in 1901, is one the first Chardonnay vineyards planted in the U.S. from Burgundian cuttings. The steep shale slopes overlooking Silicon Valley always yields a delicious wine of history, pedigree, and place. Winemaker Rob worked at neighboring Mount Eden in 2017 and always dreamed of getting Chardonnay from the mountain and it was a dream come true to start working with this fruit in 2020.
This wine was recently awarded 95 points by Matthew Luczy of the Wine Advocate and 93 points by Decanter. Luczy writes, “A clear standout in the impressive Sandar & Hem portfolio. The nose is a measured and nuanced combination of orchard and tropical fruits, white flowers, dried spices and crushed stone aromas. The palate is the most texturally generous of the lineup, yet it contains an equal measure of delicacy and lift that runs through the layered, slow-moving and coating finish.”

2023 Chestnut Hill Chardonnay
On a west-facing slope just six miles from the Monterey Bay at 1300 feet elevation lies the Chestnut Hill Vineyard. The majestic quad-trained 40 year-old vines bask atop an amphitheater-like bowl and benefit from the cool mountain climate and weathered sandstone and shale soils, yielding fruit that delivers a pure and expressive Chardonnay.

Hailing from the historic Santa Clara Valley AVA, whole-cluster pressed Sauvignon Blanc grapes yield a charming wine with aromas of guava and passion fruit and a crisp citrusy finish.

2021 Chardonnay Bozzo Gulch Vineyard
Beautiful quad-trained vines lying 700 feet above the San Francisco Bay bring us a bracingly fresh and precise Chardonnay with aromas of almond blossom, lime, chalk, citrus zest and flint. 2023 Pinot Noir Deerheart Vineyard
Planted on picturesque south-facing slopes of clay and loam, the Deerheart Vineyard lies just five miles from the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by the La Honda Open Space Preserve. We share the fruit from stunning site with Thomas Fogarty wines and it is always fun to drink both wines side by side to compare the hands of the winemaker. This site always produces intense, blue-fruited, and floral Pinot which is also fascinating to compare to the more red fruited Pinot we produce from Mindego Ridge Vineyard which is just up the road.
This wine was recently awarded 95 points by Matthew Luczy of the Wine Advocate and 93 points by Decanter. Luczy writes, “aromas of dried citrus, baking spices and pine needles, with a saline lift that reveals itself with aeration. The palate is a delicious combination of svelte, mouthwatering and concentrated, transitioning into an intense, gripping finish with focused acidity and refined, swelling tannins. It’s a beautiful combination of site, vintage and intentional winemaking.” Wine Enthusiast

2021 Bates Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon
Bates Ranch is another one of our favorite sites and has been farmed by the Bates family for four generations. This historic site is on a rocky slope facing Mount Madonna near Watsonville and our fruit comes from two adjacent blocks including a beautiful old-vine block planted in the early 1970s. The destemmed whole-berry fruit was fermented and aged for 22 months in French Oak.
A pure and elegant profile with classic Santa Cruz Mountain Cabernet notes of currants, balsam fir, chaparral, and spring flowers. Complex, layered and balanced, with fine tannins, it stays graceful and pure on the palate with great transparency and length.

2022 Pinot Noir Wilder Vineyard
This pretty little vineyard on a bench of bedrock at 1900 feet high elevation gifts us an equally pretty wine that is ruby red in color with pure fruit aromas of morello cherry and pomegranate with notes of rose petals and vanilla dancing in the upper registers. The palate is supple yet refreshing, framed by silky structure walzing with the bright red fruit. Would be at harmony with grilled salmon, roasted pork, or a steaming bowl of spaetzle.

2023 Mindego Ridge Pinot Noir
This wine bursts with aromas of sweet red cherry fruit, blueberry and purple flowers. Medium in body, translucent and wonderfully complex. Whole cluster adds to the experience, bringing a bit of savoriness and a velvety mouthfeel all rounded out with a touch of new oak frame the finish.
This wine represents our sixth vintage working with the fabulous Dave and Stacey Golnick at Mindego Ridge and the resulting wine is this is right in the sweet spot for showing the purity that can be delivered by impeccably farmed Santa Cruz Mountain Pinot Noir.

2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Peter Martin Ray Vineyard
This west facing block of had trained vines at the legendary Peter Martin Ray vineyard in Saratoga yields a lighter finesse-driven cab with a kaleidoscope of fruit and savory flavors. Beautiful notes of plum, mint, dried herb, lavender, spice on the nose with pure cassis and plum flavors and a polished structure on the palate.

Complex, layered and balanced, with fine tannins, it stays graceful and pure on the palate with great transparency and length.
