Bald Mountain
This site, at approximately 1000 feet of elevation, is south-sloped white sand Zayante soil – the only vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountain AVA on this rare soil series. In a bold move, Clone 4 chardonnay was planted own-rooted without graft to American rootstock. Just two miles from the Pacific Ocean, the sandy soils and marine influence lead to racy acid-driven and mineral wines of singular character.
Bates Ranch
Perched high atop the southeast corner of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA at elevations up to 1000 feet, the steep slopes and shallow gravelly soils of Bates Ranch have yielded stunning wines of great completixy for over four decades. The old-vine grenache vineyard sits on a mid-mountain dome and the south-facing cabernet vineyard includes an upper block planted in 1974 on St. George rootstock with majestic tree-like stature.
Bozzo Gulch Vineyard
Planted four decades ago on steep east-facing slopes of gravelly loam and decomposed sandstone, the Bozzo Gulch Vineyard lies at 700 feet above the San Francisco Bay. The Chardonnay vines benefit from warm days and ocean breeze-cooled nights, yielding a balanced wine with pure fruit, refreshing acidity, and compelling mineral mouthfeel.
Bruzzone
Located in Scotts Valley just four miles from Santa Cruz Bay, this alluvial site receives marine deposit sediment from the surrounding slopes. Planted in 1998, and currently managed by the Bruzzone family, this site produces grapes with citrus notes, vibrant acidity and floral aromatics.
Chestnut Hill
We are working with a stunning new vineyard for the ‘23 vintage in Los Gatos called Chestnut Hill Vineyard. High on the hill of sandy loam soils lies the 30+ year old Chardonnay vines and below in sweeping arcs lies rows of Dijon and Swan clone Pinot Noir.
Deerheart Vineyard
Planted on picturesque south-facing slopes of clay and loam, the Deerheart Vineyard lies just five miles from the Pacific Ocean near the town of La Honda. The warm days and ocean fog-cooled nights yield a vibrant Pinot Noir exhibiting pure blue stone fruits and compelling structure which are framed by vibrant acidity.
Lago Lomita
Towering high above the fog line at 2600 feet of elevation with sweeping views of the Monterey Bay lies the Lago Lomita Vineyard. The steeply-sloped sandy loam soils, warm days and ocean breeze-cooled nights create ideal conditions to grow Nebbiolo. The resulting wine has alluring aromas of flowers, truffle and earth spice and a palate of wonderfully pure red stone fruit.
LeBoeuf
Surrounded by towering redwoods and bordering the pristine Wilder Ranch State Park, this idylic Old-California site was planted in 1974 by Dr. Burney Le Boeuf, an Emeritus UC Santa Cruz professor who happens to be world’s authority on Elephant Seals. Blocks of heritage clone Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grafted to St. George rootstock are planted on gently-sloped decomposed granite soil. Strong maritime influence, rocky soil, and old vines drive extremely low yields resulting in wines of immense concentration, acidity, and character.
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to take over stewardship of this vineyard from the Le Boeuf family and with an eye to preserving this incredible site we have converted to all organic viticulture, and have budded the 1.5 acre pinot noir block, which was originally planted to chardonnay, back over to heritage clones of chardonnay in the spring of 2020.
Mindego Ridge
Eight miles inland from the Pacific Ocean atop a ridge of fractured Purisima Shale lies the Mindego Ridge Vineyard. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are at home here on steep, southern facing slopes benefiting from a heavily marine-influenced climate, producing wines of intense minerality, complexity, and character.
Mountain Winery Vineyard
Towering 1200 feet above Silicon Valley, on steep south-facing slopes of gravelly loam and fractured Franciscan shale, lies the historic Mountain Winery Vineyard. Originally planted to vines by the Burgundian Paul Masson at the turn of the 20th century with vines he brought back from France, this site is ground zero for fine wine in California. Replanted in 2004 to vine material from the historic vineyard, we thrill in rediscovering the origins of the legend through this wine.
Peter Martin Ray Vineyard
On a panoramic dome at 1300 feet above Silicon Valley on Mount Eden lies the historic Peter Martin Ray Vineyard. The formidable head-trained vines are dry farmed with care using organic practices on these slopes of Franciscan shale yielding a wine of kaleidoscopic aromatic complexity, dense and pure brambly fruits, and a long and structured finish.
Triolo Vineyard
Hailing from the historic Santa Clara Valley AVA, the Triolo Vineyard lies at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Located on Hecker Pass at about 600 elevation, warm days and cool nights create ideal conditions for crisp refreshing white wines like Sauvignon Blanc.
