Perched high atop the Southeast corner of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA at elevations up to 1000 feet, the steep slopes and shallow gravelly soils of Bates Ranch have yielded stunning wines of great complexity for over four decades. With shallow rocky soils separating the old grenache vines from solid bedrock, the roots have taken hold of the place, producing wines with an intense aromatic complexity, freshness, and a profound sense of “somewhereness.”
